as we drive through the Rio grande River Basin ..with lovely green valley and a few estancias along the way we stopped at the rivers edge for a picnic lunch. A pretty position even if the large flies were a nuisance!

Late start ..great for the Adventures as only left Zapala at 10.30.

Our tea/pit stop was in the middle of nowhere with a 360 degree vista. A commen scenario in central north Argentina. The 8 MGs in the middle of an expansive brown patagonia landscape must make quite a picture of colouyr by the occasional traffic passing by. I call us ‘The Little Rainbow Train”

There are always ‘Shrines of various sizes on the side of the road.. The photo attached shows a few of us  girls  by the shrine…that interestingly had fresh flowers and a burning candle inside the brick shrine.

29 January Leave Atlantic Coast in east to Parque Nacional Los Glaciares in west Argentina

DAY 20    RIO GALLEGOS to EL CHALTEN   (456km – 283 m)

(Hotel Patagonia to    LUNAJUIM HOTEL)

El Chalten  only founded in 1985, in a rush to beat Chile to the land claim . It is still a frontier town albeit an offbeat one , featuring constant construction, hippie values and packs of roaming dogs ( quote from Lonely Planet)

DSCN1574 for web Cerro FitzRoy  (Mt Fitzroy)    El Chalten is the original Tehuelche name meaninmg ‘peak of fire’ or ‘smoking mountain’  Perito Moreno and Carlos Moyano renamed it after Beagle’s Captain FitzRoy.

On finding the Petrol Station…..it is a BLUE SHIPPING CONTAINER with a pump! A Classic.

On way a lunch stop at at Estancia la Leona where Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid stayed for one months after robbing Banco Rio Gallegos and then escaped to Chile. Our generation friends will remember the movie starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford.!
